MPs, professional associations urge gov’t not sign Israeli gas deal

AMMAN — Lower House deputies, professional association presidents and civil society representatives on Sunday called on the government not to go ahead with a proposed agreement to import gas from Israel.
Deputy Jamal Gammoh, who heads the Lower House’s Energy Committee, said “the Zionist entity” does not abide by any international conventions or accords.
Participants urged the government to look for other alternatives, especially oil shale, to resolve the country’s energy problems.

Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh on Sunday said MPs are unaware of the details of the Israeli gas import agreement, adding that the public has the right to know all particulars of the planned deal.
Fuel prices are expected to drop slightly in the domestic market as of April 1, Deputy Jamal Gammoh, head of the Lower House Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, said Thursday.
Tension erupted under the Dome of Parliament on Sunday when MP Hind Fayez raised a placard rejecting natural gas imports from Israel during the Lower House session.
