Prime Ministry details efforts to curb misuse of government vehicles

AMMAN — The Prime Ministry on Tuesday released the results of measures it has taken to control the use of government vehicles. 

Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs Sami Daoud on Tuesday said that 28 vehicles owned by the Prime Ministry have been handed over to the Finance Ministry, in addition to five  cars that were received prior and redistributed to other government institutions, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ministry has also collected 17 government cars with engine capacities exceeding 2,000cc, Daoud said, noting that the government is working to withdraw other such cars to cut down on fuel expenses.

To reduce the government’s surplus of vehicles, the tasked committee has conducted field visits to a number of government institutions including Yarmouk University, Jordan University for Science and Technology, Jordan University Hospital and King Abdullah I University Hospital, among others.    

In coordination with the Jordan Customs Department, a car park has been secured for surplus vehicles which will be redistributed, sold or sent out of service, he said.

In compliance with Prime Minister Omar Razzaz's directives, any government vehicle in violation will be impounded immediately and cars above 2000cc will be handed over to the Prime Ministry, Daoud added, highlighting a government-vehicle tracking project and tasking the Public Security Department to follow up to make sure vehicles are being used for official  government business.
